NPDP FAQ
How much time is needed to prepare for the NPDP certification exam?
While the answer does depend on your prior experience and knowledge as a product manager, if you plan on approximately three hours a week you will have adequate time to read the materials and review by using the practice questions. Experienced product managers may wish to skim our Study Guide and then take the practice questions to help identify topics that need further studying.
How can I best use the practice questions?
The NPDP practice questions we provide are reflective of the content of the NPDP certification exam. Knowing this content is required to pass the exam. Our recommendation is that you follow the suggested study schedule we provide for Individuals and Groups, which involves using knowledge-area practice quizzes for each of the six core topics. However, if you are an experienced product manager, you may wish to take the Practice Exams first to identify your current comprehension of the product development body of knowledge tested on the NPDP certification exam and then devise a study plan to learn what you need to know.
What is the cost to take the NPDP Exam?
$250 fee for taking the Exam, paid to an approved exam test center (Thomson Prometric.). In addition, non-PDMA members pay a $200 registration fee to PDMA (www.pdma.org/certified.cfm). PDMA members do not pay the registration fee. The PDMA membership is $225 for one year. Note: these fees are subject to change and controlled by PDMA. See www.pdma.org for current information.
How long is the test and how many questions must be answered correctly?
The NPDP certification exam contains 200 multiple choice questions. Test takers have four hours to answer questions. 75% or more of the questions must be answered correctly to pass the exam -- 3 out of every 4 questions.
In addition to passing the NPDP Exam, what are the other requirements for earning the NPDP Certification?
An accredited bachelor's degree plus two years of recent product development experience or a high school diploma plus five years of recent product development experience. See the PDMA website for details (www.pdma.org/certified.cfm).
What is required to stay NPDP certified?
Similar to many professional certifications, continuing education is required. To maintain the NPDP certification, 20 professional development hours (PDHs) are required each year (or 60 hours over a three year period). There are several ways to accumulate PDHs, including participating in PDMA chapter meetings, attending professional programs/conferences, completing product development and management-related courses, and serving in a leadership role with PDMA. For example, by volunteering to help with the leadership of local PDMA chapters, PDHs can be earned. Every three years NPDPs must provide PDMA evidence of their continued learning and pay a registration fee. For more information see: www.pdma.org/certified.cfm
